Saturday Academy Classes

Chess for Summer: Opening Moves

INSTRUCTOR: Carl Haessler

LOCATION: Portland Chess Club (Southwest Portland)

DATES: Six meetings, Tuesday - Thursday for two weeks, July 22 - 31

TIME: 3:15 - 4:45 PM

Most chess games are won or lost in the opening moves. Players who understand the ideas of pawn structure, piece placement and the ensuing midgame have a distinct advantage.

This class will look at opening theory. You will study closed games, open games and semi-open games. Then develop an opening repertoire to compliment your own style of play.

Carl Haessler is a US Chess Federation Life Master, a three-time Oregon Champion and a chess instructor.

ENTERING GRADE LEVELS: 4 - 12
PREREQUISITE FOR OPENING MOVES: Completion of a previous Saturday Academy chess class or permission of the instructor.

TUITION: $95 (includes three-month membership to the Portland Chess Club)
