future in science

Welcome to the Students section of the AWSEM website. Just for the fact that you are looking at our website is an indication of your interest in science because you are using a computer and utilizing the internet.

Did you know?

While almost 65 percent of all jobs require computer and Internet skills, only 16 percent of the kids online are girls. (Does Jane Compute?: Preservng Our Daughter's Place in the Cyber Revolution, by Roberta Furger, Warner Books, February 1998)

No matter how interested you are in science or math, we want to make sure that you continue to take science and math classes. Why? Adults may have told you that science and math is used in everyday life. A task as simple as shopping can require a major amount of math skills. How would you know the amount of money you save from a sale if you don't know how to calculate percentages? What are all those chemicals listed in our food and household products anyway? Can those chemicals hurt us? And then there is the big picture of a job or a career.

Did you know?

Jobs requiring math and science skills will increase by 5.6 million by 2008. (Before It's Too Late: A Report to the Nation from the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century, 2000)

It is never too early to think about your future career. A part time job in the weekends or a summer job can give you a good insight of what it is like in the working world. You may even find yourself using your science and math skills along the way. For more information about jobs/career, go to the "future in science" section of this website.
